Celebrating Halloween on and around Sanibel

DATE: October 23, 2013

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. From my Princess Leia days to the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ themed party in college to now helping my own children with their costumes, I have always found the holiday to be all about fun, creativity and socializing.

Even though Halloween is a week away, the events have already begun. My husband and I decided (translation: the kids begged) to have a weekend filled with all things Halloween and try to take part in as many of the festivities as we could. Luckily, most of the events in the area are kid-friendly.

My son is most excited about Mad Scientist Saturday at the Imaginarium Science Center on Saturday. He can’t wait to see the spooky experiments and “animal oddities”. My daughter is ecstatic this year because we are finally letting her go on one of the scary haunted walks. Her and her friends are still deciding between the 29th Annual Haunted Walk at Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium and the 22nd Annual Haunted Hike at Mike Greenwell’s Bat-A-Ball & Family Fun Park. The dads are in charge of this outing, to act as both chaperone and human shield.

I’m most looking forward to the Halloween Costume Party Train on the Murder Mystery Dinner Train. My husband Josh and I have done the train ride a few times before but this will be our first time riding it during Halloween. It will definitely be a fun, mid-week date night.

Finally, we’ll be able to have a bonus night of Halloween fun at Sundial. The resort is throwing a Thriller Halloween Party and Costume Contest. I’m looking forward to the “spooky finger foods” and finding out who the “special guest” is. What’s even better is that all of the proceeds from admission will go to the F.I.S.H. of Sanibel organization.

I can’t wait until this weekend when we get to start the Halloween celebration!
