The Ultimate 3-Day Sanibel Island Family Itinerary
Finding a vacation destination that checks every box for both parents and kids can feel like searching for a rare shell on a crowded beach. You want relaxation, incredible scenery, and distinct local flavor; the kids want high-energy activities, interactive wildlife encounters, and the freedom to explore. Thankfully, Sanibel Island and Sundial Resort offer just the right mix!
Day 1: Pedal Power, Secret Shelling Spots & Poolside Fun
8:30 AM – Fueling Up at the Resort Marketplace: Start your first morning at the on-site Marketplace. Grab a round of breakfast pastries for the family and your go-to Starbucks coffee fix before hitting the trails.
9:15 AM – Bike Cruise to the East End: Head over to the resort’s Rec Shack to pick up your rental bikes. Pedal east along Sanibel’s famous, dedicated bike paths toward Lighthouse Beach Park. The lighthouse point is an iconic backdrop and a world-class shelling zone.
Tip for the Kids: Walk right along the “wrack line” (the line of seaweed and debris left by the high tide). If they look closely, this is the premier spot on the island to find tiny, incredibly intricate wentletrap shells!
11:00 AM – The Hidden Beach at Bailey Road: On your bike ride back toward the resort, take a quick detour down Bailey Road (just west of the causeway) to find a quiet, smaller stretch of beach. It’s a peaceful spot for a quick dip, and if you keep your eyes on the water, you have a fantastic chance of spotting passing dolphins or slow-moving manatees.
12:00 PM – Crafts & Beach Bites: Get back to the resort right in time for the noon family craft or game hosted by the Rec Shack team near the main pool. Afterward, grab a casual lunch at Beach Bites to fuel your afternoon.
1:30 PM – Tandem Kayaking on the Gulf: Burn off some lunch energy by checking out the resort’s two-seater family kayaks. Paddling together on the calm, flat waters of the Gulf is a great way for parents and kids to team up.
3:00 PM – Poolside Bingo & Tiki Cocktails: Cool off by the pool for the resort’s signature afternoon Bingo game. It’s high-energy fun for the kids, while mom and dad can sit back and relax with a cold drink from Turtle’s Tiki Bar.
4:30 PM – Pickleball Introduction: Head over to the courts, check out some paddles, and introduce the kids to pickleball. The fast-paced, easy-to-learn sport is perfect for kids and adults alike.
6:30 PM – Dinner at Shima: Cap off an active first day with a memorable dinner at Shima, the resort’s authentic Japanese steakhouse, where the chefs put on an entertaining tableside show that keeps the kids completely engaged.
Day 2: Dolphin Cruises, Retro Burgers & Island History
8:30 AM – Resort Breakfast Buffet: Fuel up for a busy morning on the water with a hearty breakfast buffet at the resort.
10:00 AM – Morning Dolphin & Wildlife Cruise: Drive just over the bridge to Port Sanibel Marina for a 90-minute cruise with Adventures in Paradise. This narrated boat ride takes you through San Carlos Bay, where the kids will love watching local bottlenose dolphins play in the boat’s wake.
11:45 AM – Burn Energy at Sanibel Community Park: Head back onto the island and make a quick stop at Sanibel Community Park (2231 Periwinkle). It’s a great playground space for the kids to run around and climb after being on the boat.
12:30 PM – Lunch at The Original Cheeburger Cheeburger: Located right next to the park in the Tahitian Gardens shopping plaza, this retro-themed favorite is a hit with families. The kids’ meals are famously served in cardboard classic cars, the milkshakes are legendary, and brave parents can look into the “Cheeburger Challenge.” Afterward, browse the boutique shops around the plaza.
2:00 PM – Hammock Naps & Poolside Rounds: Head back to Sundial for a well-deserved afternoon reset. Find a shady hammock for a quick nap, followed by the daily 2:00 PM resort craft and 3:00 PM poolside Bingo.
6:00 PM – Dinner at Captain’s Catch: Enjoy a fresh, seafood-focused dinner at the resort’s Captain’s Catch, highlighting local catch-of-the-day options and casual island flavors.
7:30 PM – Sunset Beach Walk & Beach Library: Take a relaxing post-dinner stroll along the beach as the sun goes down. Before bed, stop by the resort’s beach library setup to grab a few family board games or bedtime books to read together in the room.
Day 3: Surrey Rides, Wild Alligators & Shell Science
9:00 AM – Family Surrey Ride: Kick off the morning with a unique workout by renting a multi-passenger bike surrey from the resort. It takes a team effort to pedal, making for plenty of laughs as you cruise around the property paths.
10:15 AM – Beach Volleyball & Sandcastles: Set up a friendly family beach volleyball match on the resort courts, or transition to the sand for a serious sandcastle-building competition using the resort’s shelling finds.
11:30 AM – Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium: Take a short drive down Sanibel-Captiva Road to the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium. This is a fantastic, interactive stop for kids, featuring massive touch tanks filled with living mollusks, visual exhibits on local marine life, and incredible shell displays from around the world.
1:30 PM – Wildlife Drive at “Ding” Darling: Next, head down the road to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Start at the interactive Education & Visitor Center (and yes, don’t miss a stop at their famously creative, award-winning nature-themed bathrooms!). Afterward, take the slow, 4-mile Wildlife Drive where the kids can use binoculars to spot wild alligators, iguanas, and bright pink roseate spoonbills in the mangroves.
4:00 PM – Sanibel Public Library: Wrap up your afternoon exploring with a visit to the Sanibel Public Library. It features an exceptional dedicated children’s room, local shell displays, and a line of beautiful screened-in porch rocking chairs where you can sit and read together in the shade. Be sure to check their seasonal calendar for afternoon youth storytimes or summer events.
6:00 PM – Final Sunset & Dinner: Head back to the resort for one last evening pool splash and a casual dinner, letting the kids trade their favorite stories from a classic Sanibel vacation.
