2018 USTA SWFL Clay Court Championships at Sundial

DATE: August 30, 2018

The USTA-sanctioned SWFL Clay Court Championships are fast approaching and we’re busy preparing to make it the best tournament yet. Get the scoop on tennis at Sundial and the upcoming tournament from our Tennis Pro Christian Clark.

Sundial was recently awarded ‘Best Tennis on Sanibel & Captiva Islands.’ What does it take to create an award-winning tennis facility?

Creating an award-winning tennis facility takes a team of dedicated, hard-working employees with state-of-the-art equipment to maintain the highest quality facilities.

What sets tennis apart from other sports, like golf or volleyball?

Tennis is one of the few sports that people can play throughout their lives. Tennis allows for a competitive individual event as well as team competition and camaraderie through tournaments and league play.

We’ve heard rumblings of an iguana at the Miami Open – any similar stories to share from Sundial?

Tennis players have had some crazy moments over the years! Last year, an iguana decided to join the game in the Miami Open. Another time during a tennis match, an Osprey flew over and dropped its very large fish dinner on the court.  We had to play a let!

Sundial offers six state-of-the-art HydroGrid clay courts. What are some advantages to the HydroGrid courts, as opposed to standard clay or hard courts?

HydroGrid allows for underground watering, eliminating the need for sprinkler heads popping up on the court. This prevents the need to shut down the courts for watering, giving our guests greater access to the courts. The temperature on the HydroGrid courts is 20% cooler than traditional clay courts, and are designed for better joint health.

Soon, these courts will see some serious action with the 2018 USTA SWFL Clay Court Championships. What makes Sundial the ideal location for this competition?

Guests and islanders have voted Sundial the Best Full-Service Resort on Sanibel & Captiva Islands. We have six state-of-the-art HydroGrid clay courts, but we also have 12 brand-new pickleball courts, kayaking, paddle boards, five onsite restaurants, and luxurious accommodations.

How did the partnership between Sundial and USTA begin?

Sundial has hosted a large number of tennis tournaments over the years, and has consistently been the Mecca for tennis events on Southwest Florida beaches.

What have been some of the most memorable moments or events of this tournament in the past?  Undoubtedly, the tremendous local community support! The USTA SWFL Clay court championships is a very competitive event that brings together recreational players, competitive players, friends and families from near and far who enjoy the game of Tennis, fine dining, beaches and a wide variety of resort amenities.
