‘Good Morning America’ Salutes National Seashell Day at Sundial
She sells seashells at the seashore? Not at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa at Southwest Florida’s Sanibel Island. And certainly not on June 20, National Seashell Day.
The seashells were in proverbial bloom recently as ABC’s “Good Morning America” weather anchor Ginger Zee and others descended on beautiful Sanibel Island to salute the start of the Sunshine State’s summer and the first National Seashell Day.
The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel, an initiative of Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau, launched the “holiday” to “shellebrate the summer!”
With Zee overseeing the live broadcast of National Seashell Day, more than two dozen people sauntered to the Gulf of Mexico’s shore to do the inimitable “Sanibel Stoop,” which is the requisite posture for proper shelling, according to the News-Press, Fort Myers’ daily newspaper. Sundial was chosen as the GMA live broadcast site.
Sundial Guests Enjoy Fun During Shell Love Bug Visit
Sundial Beach Resort & Spa guests enjoyed a gala of shelling fun and frolic as the Shell Love Bug was formally introduced. The 2005 VW Beetle convertible underwent a maritime conversion of sorts: a seafaring transformation into a “sailor’s-valentine-on-wheels.”
Sand sculptors Bill and Marianne Knight of The Sand Lovers fame were busy nearby forming sail canvas on bamboo to salute the temporary partnership between the visitors bureau and the television program.
Lee County holds world-class status for sea shelling on its 50 miles of beaches with local officials expected to highlight the opportunity to collect – or examine – more than 400 types of shells. Events include scavenger hunts and visits from the Shell Love Bug.
Bureau executive director Tamara Pigott praised the impact Sanibel Island’s shelling splendor has on the local economy and the media attention it garners. “While it is difficult to accurately assign a cash value to items such as on-air mentions by celebrities, the cash value of this promotion easily surpasses $500,000,” she told reporters.
The opportunities to have a shell of a lot of fun continue unabated at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa, which is offering a truly shellerrific Sundial Shellebration special:
